The Pacific - Robert Leckie
Robert Leckie är en av huvudkaraktärerna i succéserien The Pacific som just nu går på Canal Plus. Jag tänkte försöka lägga ut lite fakta om de tre huvudpersonerna och börjar med min favorit Robert Leckie spelad av James Badge Dale.
Leckie föddes den 18.e December i Philadelphia och växte upp i en familj bestående av 8 barn varav han var yngst.
Dagen efter att Japan anföll Pearl Harbor, gick Leckie med i USA's marinkår. Han var mestadels kulspruteskytt. Han hamnade på sjukhus tio gånger och fick smeknamnet "Lucky".
Leckie krigade i "Battles of Guadalcanal" och "Cape Gloucester". I sin bok "Helmet For My Pillow" beskriver han skillnaden mellan de båda.
"It was the jungle and the rain, too, that made New Britain [the island on which Cape Gloucester is located] so different from Guadalcanal. I knew that it was going to be different the moment that I ran down the ramp of our L.C.I. and across a narrow black beach, scrambling up a small steep bank to burst from sunlight into the gloom of the jungle. For, in that moment, the rains began to fall; and in that moment we began to hunt the foe." (Leckie, Helmet for My Pillow, pages 216-17.)
Efter kriget gifte sig Leckie med Vera Keller (hans barndoms granne) och de fick tre barn. Leckie avled när han var 81 år i Alzheimers och har skrivit 40 böcker. De flesta handlar om militärhistoria men några om hans familj och sport.
